What a motion capture suit actually does.

An inertial mocap suit is a set of IMU sensors — accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetometers — strapped to the body or woven into a lycra suit. Each sensor reports its own rotation, and the software assembles a skeleton from those readings. No cameras, no optical markers.

That is both the suit's superpower and its weakness. Because nothing watches the performer from outside, suits work in the dark and through total occlusion — and for the same reason, their sense of where the body is in the room drifts over a take, and nearby ferrous metal disturbs the sensors keeping the skeleton oriented.

    Inertial rigs stream motion into your engine or DCC with low latency. For broadcast, live stage work and VTubing, streaming wins outright — mimem reconstructs offline.

  • No line of sight needed

    The sensors ride on the body, so nothing has to see the performer. Crowded sets, tight spaces and full-contact choreography stay clean where cameras would be blocked.

Positional drift

IMUs integrate acceleration to estimate position, and small errors accumulate — world-space position wanders over long takes and needs cleanup in post.

Magnetic interference

Magnetometers keep the skeleton oriented, and they react to steel structures, rebar and stage rigging. Some venues fight the suit.

One suit per performer

Every actor in the scene wears their own hardware, so the equipment line multiplies with the cast.

Suit-up and calibration

Sensor placement and calibration poses before each session, per performer — typically 30–45 minutes before anyone acts.

Wardrobe constraint

The performer wears the suit, not the costume. Capturing in character wardrobe means working around the sensors.

Recurring costs

Straps, batteries and lycra wear out, and capture software is often licensed separately, per seat and per year.
