Multi-Actor Capture

๐Ÿ“–
mimem.ai supports up to 3 actors in the same session. Getting great results comes down to two things: distinctive outfits, and cameras positioned to see everyone clearly.

How should my actors dress?

Outfit choice is the single most important factor. mimem.ai identifies each actor by their clothing colors โ€” if two actors look similar, the system may mix them up.

Wear solid, contrasting colors

Each actor should wear a solid-colored outfit in a clearly different color from the others โ€” from top to bottom. Red, blue, and green work great. Red and orange don't โ€” they're too close.
Avoid:
  • Patterns, stripes, or graphics
  • Black or white (hard to tell apart under different lighting)
  • Matching outfits
๐Ÿ’ก
Hair and hats don't help distinguish actors โ€” don't rely on them.

Don't change outfits mid-session

mimem.ai builds a color profile for each actor over time. A costume change mid-session will confuse it. If a costume change is needed, start a new session.
๐Ÿ’ก
The one thing that causes hard failures โ€” where actors get permanently mixed up โ€” is similar-looking outfits. Occlusion may lead to some cleanup work, but identical colors will give you wrong results. Distinctive outfits are the most important thing you can do for a successful multi-actor session.

How should I set up my cameras?

For multiple actors, more camera coverage means fewer tracking errors to deal with in post. When an actor is only visible from behind or partially occluded, the system will still track them โ€” but you may see some jitter or small positional errors that need manual cleanup. More angles reduce how often this happens.

For simple, contained choreography

3 cameras can work well, with deliberate placement to cover all actors from different angles.

For dynamic movement

If actors spread across the space or move a lot, add more cameras. The risk of a camera only catching one actor's back increases with range of motion โ€” 4 or more is advisable in those cases.
๐Ÿ’ก
Consistent lighting across all cameras matters more with multiple actors. Check our Lighting Guide for tips.

Configuring your session

When starting a session, set the actor count to the exact number of people you want to track. This tells mimem.ai how many prominent actors to follow โ€” anyone else in the background (a crew member walking by, for example) won't be tracked.
Note that processing cost scales with the number of actors, since each additional person requires more computation.
๐Ÿ’ก
Actors can freely step out of frame and return during the session โ€” mimem.ai will re-identify them by their outfit when they come back.

What to watch out for

Very close contact

Very close full-body contact โ€” like a tight hug โ€” is not currently supported and will likely cause the system to mix up the actors. Brief touches, passing each other, or side-by-side movement all work well. Plan your choreography to avoid sustained full-body contact between actors.
