How to Get Accurate Foot Tracking

📖
Capturing fast steps, pivots, or grounded motion? mimem.ai’s calibration-free, multi-camera system already handles the heavy lifting.
Just follow these simple tips to improve foot tracking right away.

Make your feet visible (and keep them in frame)

Your feet should remain clearly visible in at least two camera views throughout your movement.
For best results, place your cameras at hip or knee height (around 70–100 cm), facing you directly or with a slight downward angle. This helps keep your feet in frame, unlike top-down views that distort body proportions and can hide your feet.

💡
Spread your cameras around you, not just from the front. This helps the system keep tracking even when one view is blocked.

Control contrast with the floor

The system tracks your movement based on what it sees so your feet need to stand out clearly from the floor.
Avoid going barefoot. Wearing shoes is recommended for better tracking accuracy. Shoes provide clearer contours and help the system follow your feet more reliably, especially when you move quickly.
If you’re not wearing shoes, wear socks that contrast with the floor. For example, dark socks on a light floor, or light socks on a dark floor.
But don’t wear shiny or reflective shoes as they can cause tracking errors and make your feet flicker on screen.

Light feet evenly (and softly)

Good lighting near the feet can help reduce flickering or tracking glitches, especially on low-contrast floors.
Shadows from side or overhead lighting can sometimes make feet harder to detect, for example, when one foot fades into a dark corner or blends with the floor.
To improve this, try using soft, even lighting, especially around the lower half of your body.

Do a quick foot-focused test run

Before recording your full take, run a short test with the actual movements you’ll perform — walk, turn, step, jump etc.
Watch the playback closely:
Are your feet always in frame? Do they blend into the floor or get lost in shadow? Are they ever blocked by your legs, furniture, or props?
If needed, adjust your lighting, camera angles, or footwear until everything reads clearly.
💡
It only takes a few seconds, but a targeted test run can make the difference between messy tracking and smooth, natural foot motion.
